The M1911 is the original version of the famous M1911 series. It was an improvement based on feedback of John Browning's earlier pistol, the Colt Model 1900; Browning added several features that have since become commonplace on pistols, such as a safety switch, slide lock, and mag release button, over the course of 11 years. It was also chambered in the larger .45 ACP round, a change made with the Model 1905 pistol. The M1911 was adopted by the US Army and used in WWI, and M1911 pattern pistols have been widely used for over 100 years since. It was replaced with the M1911A1 in 1924, which had various minor improvements.
